In Apple TV : the hell with component output, I discovered that the beast had component output, unusable on my european CRT TV using SCART sockets. However, thanks to the work of a few hackers, getting composite output from the Apple TV is possible, indeed.
Mine came with firmware 1.1, so I followed the appropriate hacking guides to install sshd, Perian, and a bunch of other goodies like Sapphire.

The composite output setup needed this and that. My next steps will be to install a SMB/CIFS client and mount a Samba share where my movies are located. Meanwhile, scp is my friend when I want to watch a movie. I get about 4-5 Mb/s copy speed, so copying a movie from my linux server to the Apple TV takes only a few minutes.
So far, I think the Apple TV will allow me to watch movies on my big 32″ TV screen instead of the Macbook Pro. Stuff like photo and friend will come later, when a LCD screen will replace the CRT, and provide nicer color rendering.
