With iTunes storage used to sync and backup the iPhone, disk space was running low on my Macbook Pro 15″. I bought a Samsung SpinPoint M6 320 Go – 5400t/min. – 2.5″ – SATA disk to replace it and went ahead using this nice guide.
I had a hard time deciding between a Time Machine restore or a new install with selected restores, and select the later to get rid of 18 months of accumulated cruft on the box. I looks snappier at the login, so it was a good decision.
If you do something similar, use the backup/export of Addressbook and iCal to easily re-import them after re-installation. For iMail, I use IMAP so it was only a matter of re-configuring the mail server.
Now that my installation is done, I have about 200 Gb free space left on the disk, nice, as I carry all my pictures with me (iPhoto) and a bunch of songs in iTunes, mainly the ones I sync in the iPhone.
Edit : after using the Macbook Pro for a few hours, I noticed a frequent “tschh-clic” comming from my new disk. I guess it’s the head auto-parking, but not sure. Suggestions welcome. I disabled the disk power saving in the preferences, without any noticeable change.
