The DVD drive of my old Dell Inspiron 8600 died. Doesn’t want to play anything anymore. Annoying for the kids playtool. So I bought an external, USB DVD player with all possible features for only CHF 101.-. Bad idea : this drive is almost unusable, as it draw too much power from the USB connectors. All laptops on which I tried it had USB power surge issues. Only my 2007 Macbook Pro could handle it.
I ended up buying a powered USB-2 hub from Targus to insert between the old Dell laptop and the DVD drive. Luckily, all this stuff almost never moves away from its table. Lesson learned : only buy external-powered drives. USB is not powerful enough to spin on a DVD.
