I waited for a few days after iOS4 public availability to upgrade my 2-years old iPhone 3G. Having a need for some applications only available for jailbreaked phones, I used PwnageTool 4.01 to upgrade and jailbreak at the same time.

The restore of my custom IPS image in DFU mode failed with error 1600. To fix it, I had to create an “expert” image in PwnageTool and use 1000 Mb size for the root filesystem (tip from some forum). After this, the DFU restore worked. After reboot, no Swisscom GSM/3G service at all, I had to install Ultrasn0w from Cydia. Now it seem everything is working again.

Apple still doesn’t provide a week-view in their calendar. I impatiently wait for the CalDAV-enabled version of PocketInformant to get this feature.

I bought a Samsung SpinPoint M6 320 Go – 5400t/min. – 2.5″ – SATA disk to replace it and went ahead using this nice guide.

I had a hard time deciding between a Time Machine restore or a new install with selected restores, and select the later to get rid of 18 months of accumulated cruft on the box. I looks snappier at the login, so it was a good decision.

If you do something similar, use the backup/export of Addressbook and iCal to easily re-import them after re-installation. For iMail, I use IMAP so it was only a matter of re-configuring the mail server.

Now that my installation is done, I have about 200 Gb free space left on the disk, nice, as I carry all my pictures with me (iPhoto) and a bunch of songs in iTunes, mainly the ones I sync in the iPhone.

Edit : after using the Macbook Pro for a few hours, I noticed a frequent “tschh-clic” comming from my new disk. I guess it’s the head auto-parking, but not sure. Suggestions welcome. I disabled the disk power saving in the preferences, without any noticeable change.

On the Palm, I used Top Secret, with no desktop counterpart (I had no need for one). After a quick market check, I found SplashId, which has many interesting features :

multiple mobile platforms (not that I have any intention to ever use Windows Mobile, but Series 60 is nice to have)

sync to a desktop version

export and import for many other password managers, so it’s not a data silo.

it uses 256 bits Blowfish to protect my data. I trust Blowfish a lot, because it comes from Bruce Schneier and not from these Security Theater people.

And the best : you can sync to the desktop over wireless, by creating an ad-hoc wireless network. Much smarter than carrying a USB cable around. It just misses a Linux desktop, but I use Linux only on servers for now.

I don’t know what Apple had in mind when they decided to exclude a To-Do application from the iPhone software set. That a big no-go for me, but luckily, third-party developers have stepped in.

I had a look at the Omnifocus, it includes an iPhone version, but the set is expensive for what it offer. So far, not many products are offering native iPhone apps and the associated sync. One worth watching is Things but the sync isn’t there yet. And I needed something right now.

I found a good combination by using the Toodledo web app and the Appigo Todo native app. I don’t like having my data in a silo on a free service, but Toodledo offers many export capabilities, so I’m able to run away in case. And there is even something for the hacker. I will play with this set for a while, and then decide whether I buy the 15$/year pro version. Sub-tasks is the big incentive, but I don’t know if I really need them.

I try to be a GTD-organized person, but I’m not really up to it yet.

My iPhone 3G had really a bad time to get contacts from iTunes sync. I googled a lot, and tried a lot of cookbooks involving removing caches, shifting away syncservice directories, and even singing a little bit. And then, I went back to my UNIX roots, and thought about log files…

… and hop, /var/log/system.log exhibited an error everytime I tried to sync :

Aug 7 20:54:57 sliver [0x0-0x76076].com.apple.iTunes[998]: Created child to sync device with pid 1032...
Aug 7 20:55:00 sliver AddressBookSync[1033]: AddressBookSync (client id: com.apple.AddressBook) error: Exception running AddressBookSync: CoreData could not fulfill a fault for '0x1df93a0 <x-coredata://A1B164FD-0561-4C9C-9F97-4D7EDC73408B/ABCDEmailAddress/p779>'
Aug 7 20:55:10 sliver [0x0-0x76076].com.apple.iTunes[998]: MobileDevice: AMDeviceCopyValue: There was an error getting the value from lockdown

I then tried to narrow down the error, and came to a tool called Synchrospector, located in /Developer/Applications/Utilities/Syncrospector (get developer tools from here, ~ 1 Gb download). I could click around and produce the error quicker than the “Sync” button in iTunes.

I then tried to locate the UID above in the data, to not available. The only place I could find it was in a SQLite database located in ~/Application\ Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb.

I started by exporting my addressbook (File / Export / AddressBook Archive) to a file, so I could restore it. I then deleted a bunch of addresses, synced, and repeated until the error were gone. And I found the error to be in a very usual addressbook entry. From the time I deleted it, I could again sync my iphone in iTunes and get all the desired contacts.

It looks like Apple need some more checking in its sync framework. And by the way, adding some usable info to the log file (like the contact ASCII data) would be extremely helpful for the poor guy having a corrupted record.
