My multi-function Brother DCP-540CN announced error 46, meaning it could not clean it’s print head anymore. Somewhere on the web, I found the following procedure (french) :

Then, I had to replace the ink absorber box, which goes by the part number LP5186001. I asked Brother and they sent me one within 2 days. I don’t know its price yet, I haven’t got any bill so far.

Dismounting the DCP-540CN is hard. Many screws, plastic clips and cables to disconnect. I broke a few plastics clips, mainly because Brother doesn’t publish any service manual.

The disassembled printer with the new and old ink absorbers.

Long story short, I managed to replace the ink absorber box (while getting a lot of ink on the table, ground, my T-shirt and my hands).

And the most amazing : it still print (even if my T-shirt goes to the waste basket).

I waited for a few days after iOS4 public availability to upgrade my 2-years old iPhone 3G. Having a need for some applications only available for jailbreaked phones, I used PwnageTool 4.01 to upgrade and jailbreak at the same time.

The restore of my custom IPS image in DFU mode failed with error 1600. To fix it, I had to create an “expert” image in PwnageTool and use 1000 Mb size for the root filesystem (tip from some forum). After this, the DFU restore worked. After reboot, no Swisscom GSM/3G service at all, I had to install Ultrasn0w from Cydia. Now it seem everything is working again.

Apple still doesn’t provide a week-view in their calendar. I impatiently wait for the CalDAV-enabled version of PocketInformant to get this feature.

I have been bitten by the buggy iconv provided by Sun many times. A few years ago with Samba on Solaris 9, now again with FreeTDS on top of Solaris 10. It is amazing how bad Sun has been about providing software on top of Solaris. The OS itself might be cool, and ZFS is amazing. However, if you want to do something on this OS, you will quickly need to compile software yourselve.

All Linux distributions are providing ten of thousands of packages, installed with a simple command. On Solaris, expect to spend hours running ./configure and make in iterative mode until you get something running. And then you start again because you forgot to add some “-L -R” and it is now complaining about a missing library. And don’t talk to me about the dreadful Blastwave and OpenCSW. The rule is simple : if you want to build something above Solaris, be ready to become a SVR4 packager.

No wonder why Solaris is dying. The purchase by Oracle wasn’t really needed to kill it. The suicide was written all over the wall long before Oracle even thought about it.

I was subscriber of Solnet ADSL since a few years. Solnet was a good ISP, but they didn’t offer interesting upgrades to high bandwidth DSL for my place. After studying the market a bit, I stumbled upon the VDSL offer of green.ch. I’m paying about the same price as before, but I have now 16’000/1’000 speed. The new speed is OK, even if I had no direct usage for it. For remote engineering, the fast upstream speed is especially nice.

The migration took some time to sort out, but the link appear to be stable. Green.ch provide the Zyxel 2802 VDSL router, which I configured as bridge, behind my D-Link router. After having migrated DNS and friends, all is set.

As my current contrat will soon come to end, I’m open for a new challenge. I have done UNIX and Linux since a very long time, I even got a Solaris certification a few years ago. I know stuff like Apache, reverse-proxies, NMS (Network Management Systems) aka OSS (Operation Support Systems). I have experience with tools like CA eHealth, NerveCenter, Cacti, Zenoss, Nagios, NetFlow anf friends, I can code in Perl, PHP and the usual shell languages.

Ideally, the region should be around Bern / Solothurn / Neuchâtel / Lausanne, but I’m open for other locations if tele-commuting is OK. My CV is available on request.

done

echo “all done”

Feel free to find out how to get a list of calendars using some smart curl command and CALDAV enumeration.
